Indigenous Peoples converge on Bario

Indigenous Peoples from Asia and around the world converged on Bario at the start of December 2007, to attend a UNDP workshop on Indigenous Peoples and ICTs.

You can find out more about the workshop and results:

  • An E-Bario Vision for Asia Indigenous Peoples and ICTs was developed during the workshop and finalised and consensus reached at a very constructive meeting in the airport in Bario as we all waited for our flights back to Miri.

I travelled to Bario at the start of December, after a short stopover in Miri, where I was fortunate enough to attend the Triennial Kelabit function.

I worked with a group of Kelabit children, who varied in age from about 10-14 yrs and in numbers from 8-15. I taught them how to use a couple of digital cameras and the minidisc and set off with them and Miriam, the excellent facilitator to take some pictures. We created a photostory from the pictures they took over one day in Bario.

You can see a short movie of the photostory by following the link to youtube to watch:

I also attended a UNDP workshop on Indigenous Peoples and ICTs, which was a great opportunity to meet Indigenous Media practitioners from around the world and hear more about their fascinating work.

You can see some more of these pictures on my flickr site.

I then went on to attend the GK3 in Kuala Lumpur.

    Pictures and vid to follow.
